Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

In this position, the Senior Engineer will work with Principal Engineers within the Systems Operability and Analysis department to conduct the following tasks:

50% - The engineer will support the flight program for RL10 and evaluate flight data to determine engine health and conformance to performance requirements. You will verify flight readiness and create and present readiness reviews and subsequently provide post flight analysis, instrumentation validity and anomaly resolution. The analyst will then create and attend post flight data reviews where they will present engine performance results to an Engineering Review Board. This work is sometimes performed outside normal work hours.

30% - Learn, maintain, and improve the software tools (scripts, web applications, analysis applications) that enable the group to receive data, store/manage data and perform data reduction of flight engine operation. A desire to create/use/improve computer tools and skill in coding is required. Most of the current analyses are completed using Perl, Fortran, Python, SQL, and JavaScript. There is always room for improvement and if there’s a more efficient way to accomplish the tasks you will be encouraged to make that happen. This portion of the job can also go beyond traditional engine data analyses as you learn how to better integrate information needed from multiple disciplines within the company. You may also be called upon to help other groups that depend on integrated data relative to the engine system.

10% - Support of existing liquid rocket engine development and qualification programs by performing cycle and engine matching analyses to analyze engine data to develop an understanding of component level performance and its relationship to overall engine performance in both steady-state and transient engine operating modes. The engineer will use test data to validate and update system simulations as required to enable accurate predictions of engine operating states. This individual will be guided to develop the necessary design skills required to analyze and create system designs and will utilize analysis configuration control principles to document results and conclusions.

10% - The systems analyst may assist in advanced concept thermodynamic design of liquid rocket engines to define propulsion cycles that meet functional vehicle requirements. Duties will include creating, maintaining and using math models of propulsion systems which characterize the thermodynamic, aerodynamic, fluid dynamic and mechanical operation of these systems.
