We are currently seeking a Specialist. Test Data Systems Engineer to join our team located at Culpeper, Virginia.
Test Data System Engineers work with customers, design/project engineers and internal test personnel to implement and maintain data acquisition and control systems for a variety of propulsion system tests. They then review data files, process video, reduce test data and create reports for deliverable test data. Test Data System Engineers use a wide range of engineering skills to work with a variety of facility equipment, from Process Logic Controllers (PLCs) and remote pressure controllers to data system software and networking. Types of tests include static rocket motor firings, altitude test firings, case proof and burst pressure testing, case structural loads testing, direct-connect ramjet/scramjet testing, aeroheat material testing, and dynamic/environmental testing.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
Working with minimal direction, the Sr. Test Data Systems Engineer will:
25% - Design, develop, and maintain test facility data acquisition and control hardware and software (C/QNX, Pacific, Allen-Bradley PLC, etc.), and electronic circuits to interface with facility and/or test article instrumentation and controls. Oversee and maintain video surveillance systems. This also includes maintaining configuration control of production test data acquisition, control, and data reduction software.
20% - Perform data reduction and analysis, video processing, data file management, and report distribution. This includes having quality control responsibility for all deliverable test data.
20% - Interface with Design/Project Engineering to develop/interpret instrumentation and control requirements. Identify/specify instrumentation and control configurations to meet test requirements. Support test planning by devising and preparing instrumentation and control methods and procedures, applying extensive technical expertise.
20% - Perform, oversee and support test operations, including control room operation, instrumentation calibration and setup, electrical/controls/PLC setup and/or programming, test article prep, control software input preparation, etc., all in accordance with safety and quality policy and procedures. Perform or support system calibrations in collaboration with the Quality organization. May include directing subcontractors in their execution of subcontracted test programs at off-site test facilities.
10% - Recommend, propose, plan, and execute (manage cost and schedule) facility upgrades, equipment acquisition and installation to meet ongoing and developing test program requirements. Coordinate cost and schedule planning/estimates. Provide technical expertise to other departments and sites, as required.
5% - Prepare technical documentation, including software logs, test procedures, electrical schematics, and test readiness reviews. Provide training to Control Room Operators on data acquisition, calibration, and controls setup.
Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate discipline (computer science, electrical, aerospace, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline) along with 9 years of directly related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Strong written and verbal communication skills; strength in teaming and collaboration in a diverse work environment.
Related work experience and proficiency with one or more of the following is preferred:
Data acquisition systems
Including Classified data system requirements, setup, and maintenance
Data Acquisition, Calibration, and Controls software
Digital Video Recording and Editing
Instrumentation and signal conditioning (Strain gage, pressure, force, temperature, etc.)
PLC’s (Ladder logic, Allen Bradley, etc.)
May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires U.S. Citizenship, U.S. Permanent Residency or other status as a U.S. Person.
Must be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements:
The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (crane, hoist, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
