We are currently seeking a Rocket Test Engineer to join our team located at Culpeper, Virginia.

Rocket Test Engineers work with test personnel, design/project engineers, and customers to acquire and process data for a variety of propulsion system tests, which involves the design and implementation of data acquisition and controls, operation of the control room during testing, and the review and processing of data and video. They use a wide range of engineering skills to work with a variety of facility hardware and software including high-speed data acquisition systems (DAS), process controllers, and other test computer systems. Types of tests consist of static rocket motor firings, direct-connect ramjet/scramjet testing, altitude simulation test firings, case proof and burst pressure testing, case structural loads testing, aero-heat material testing, and dynamic/environmental testing.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

Responsibilities:

Working with minimal direction, theRocket Test Control Room Operator / Controls Engineerwill:

50% - Perform, oversee and support test operations, including control-room operations and access control, instrumentation calibration and setup, electrical/controls/PLC setup, test article prep, control software input preparation, etc., all in accordance with safety and quality policy and procedures. Perform or support data system equipment calibrations in collaboration with the Quality organization.

20% - Design, develop, and maintain test facility data acquisition and control hardware and software (C/QNX, Pacific, Allen-Bradley PLC, etc.) to interface with facility and/or test article instrumentation and controls to meet test objectives.

15% - Perform data reduction and analysis, video processing, data file management, and report distribution. This includes having quality control responsibility for all deliverable test data.

10% -Maintain test facility equipment (instrumentation, data acquisition systems, video recording systems, cable repair, etc.).

5% - Prepare technical documentation, including data reports, test procedures, electrical schematics, and test readiness reviews.

Requirements

Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate discipline (computer science, electrical, aerospace, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline) and 2 years experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills; strength in teaming and collaboration in a diverse work environment.

Related work experience and proficiency with one or more of the following is preferred:

  • Data acquisition systems

  • Including Classified data system requirements, setup, and maintenance

  • Test lab experience is a plus

  • Calibration procedures

  • Data Acquisition, Calibration, and Controls software

  • Networking

  • Digital Video Recording and Editing

  • Data reduction

  • Instrumentation and signal conditioning (Strain gage, pressure, force, temperature, etc.)

  • Programming

  • PLC’s (Ladder logic, Allen Bradley, etc.)

  • LabView

  • C/C++ programming

  • Matlab/Simulink

  • Electronic Cabling/Wiring/Soldering

May be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level. Requires U.S. Citizenship. Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner.While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
